A Look At The Pros & Cons Of Modulating Variable Speed Furnaces

Buying a new furnace for your home is going to be a huge decision to make, especially since a furnace will keep you and your family warm for several years after installation. One of the most popular modern furnace types is the modulating variable speed furnace. Even though this is a popular furnace choice, it is a choice that a lot of homeowners don't know a lot about. To help you decide if this is the right furnace type for you, take a look at some of the pros and cons of the modulating variable speed furnace.

Pro: The furnace adjusts itself according to the temperature outside.

The modulating variable speed furnace has the ability to automatically adjust heat and fan settings depending on what the temperatures are outside. This intuition function means that you will automatically be provided with more heating during cold days and less during warm days, and the furnace will not necessarily have to have your input. In basic terms, the furnace works harder when its colder outside and easier when it's not, which can mean a lot of cost savings through the year.

Con: The furnace can be more costly than single or two-stage furnaces.

Just like a lot of appliances and systems with more modern features, the modulating variable speed furnace is going to cost a bit more up front to have installed. Single-stage and two-stage furnaces are far less intuitive and don't have the energy-efficiency to boast, but the variable speed furnace does. Even though you may have to pay more for the furnace initially, you can expect to recoup what you pay in your cost savings on home heating throughout the year.

Pro: The furnace's fan can run even when there is no heat being provided.

If you have issues with allergies or need better air quality inside of your home, the modulating variable speed furnace is a good choice over other models. This is one of the few furnace models that has a fan that you can continue to run even if you are not using the heat. The fan constantly circulates air through the filter and through the house when you set it to do so, which can help with air quality through all seasons of the year. For instance, if you have issues with air quality in the summer and do not have a central cooling system, regular circulations of the furnace's fan system can really combat allergens and contaminants in the air.
